Movie: Holding Trevor

This Movie is Rated R – For Sexual Content, Language and Some Drug Material

Brent Gorski (Trevor) wrote and stars in this movie. It’s his first screenplay (at least that’s been made into a movie) and all of the actors in it have very little acting experience. At times you can tell that the people involved are rather inexperienced, however, I don’t think that hurts the movie. In fact that is part of the charm of it.

This movie is all about finding yourself and what you want from life and I think the fact that it’s not a slick Hollywood production makes it all the better. You have the character of Trevor that is dealing with his long time friend/boyfriend’s (Darrell) drug addiction. He also works at a boring, dead-end job answering phone calls at an answering service. Then he meets Ephram (Eli Kranski), an intern working towards becoming a doctor, and starts dating him.

Needless to say things don’t always go smoothly, starting a new relationship while you are ending the other. Throw in a drug addict and it’s even more complicated. He deals with his issues with the help of his friend and roommate, Andie (Melissa Searing) and his other friend Jake (Jay Brannan).

Jake is a singer/songwriter/musician. He lives the typical lifestyle, performing, partying and plenty of one-night stands. As witnessed in the scenes where guys that were his previous hook-ups approach him, but he can’t even remember their names. Jake is also sarcastic and readily speaks his mind.

Jay is perfect as Jake. He makes him a loveable character, even though sometimes the things he says are a bit harsh. There is just something about Jay that catches your attention, he’s a cutie, but there’s more to it than that. We also get to hear him perform one of his own original songs “Lower My Gun“. Jay gained some fame due to his performance in the movie “Shortbus”. He is currently doing an overseas concert tour promoting his new CD.

There are many great moments in the film, some silly, some touching and some sad. Here are some of my favorites (without being too spoilery):

Whenever life gets too tough for Trevor he goes to the car wash. While he is sitting in his car, as it is pulled through the wash, he screams at the top of his lungs. It’s his way of releasing tension in privacy.

While Trevor, Jake and Andie are hanging out at a bar talking, he finally tells them about Ephram. It’s a fun, friends giving each other a hard time, moment. At least until the talk turns to the subject of Darrell.

Jake is anxious about going for an HIV test so he asks Trevor to go with him. Both Trevor and Andie go with him for moral support and decide to also get tested while they are there. It shows that they are supportive of each other, even though they can all argue like crazy at times.

I love the scene when Jake is singing at the club. He dedicates the song to Trevor. It’s a touching scene and great to get a chance to hear him sing. Plus the inter-cut scenes during the song are so emotional.

Some of my favorite quotes:

Trevor – “You’ve been back in town for what, all of 15 minutes?”

Jake – “More like 45 if you count baggage claim.”

Jake – “I don’t think that losing your virginity to someone at age 16 automatically classifies you as life long friends.”

Trevor – “I’m part of an elite organization of telephonic representatives.”

Andie – “You a$$hole, how did you even get in here?”

Jake – “That’s a good question, I don’t have the answer.”

Jake – “Oh, come on, you guys kissed. I mean in Trevor terms you’re like practically married already.”

Jake – “My friends are fighting, so could you please bring us more drinks because their friendship totally depends on it.”

Jake – “Hey, Trev, I told him you didn’t want to see him but he just pushed past me and he’s strong for a leprechaun.”

Jake – “F*cking roommates.”

Andie – “You don’t even live here!”

Jake – “This isn’t really a time for that phrase is it?”

Andie – “No Jake it’s not.”

In the special features section they are some extended scenes. I enjoyed the ones that featured Trevor and Jake; BBQ, long drive and soap song. They give a little more insight into their friendship. The soap one is just silly (but they seem to be having fun).

Following is additional information about the show that contains spoilers. If you don’t want to be spoiled don’t read any further.

I liked the irony in the fact that the person you would least expect to test positive for HIV (stereotypically anyway) is the one that does. I felt so bad for Andie when they were having their “Jake still doesn’t have the HIV … yet” party. He is the one that is continually having one night stands, but she ends up positive, not him.

I was glad that Trevor didn’t end up moving to New York with Ephram. Although I liked them together, I don’t think the move would have been in Trevor’s best interest. He needed time to get over Darrell’s death. Plus he really needs to find out who he is and what he wants in life before he makes that kind of commitment to someone. Now is the time he really needs his Jake and Andie support group. Not to mention the fact that Andie is going to need all the help she can get right now.
